Negros University and Talisay City formally launched a
scholarship program dubbed as “Kolehiyo sa Baryo” in a
program held October 8, 2009
at the City’s Public Plaza .
Led by Mayor Eric Saratan and the members of the local
government of Talisay City with WNU’s VP for Academic
Affairs, Dr. Cleo Grace T. Hinaut representing
University President, Dr. Suzette Lilian A. Agustin and
members of the school’s administration during the
ceremony signed the memorandum of agreement.
Recent evaluation and assessment of the City reveals
that a number of scholars living in far-flung barangays
enrolled in the
university and colleges within the city
proper have dropped out due to lack of financial
capacity to support their transportation needs.
To address such problems, Mayor Saratan spearheaded the
“Kolehiyo sa Baryo” with WNU responsive to the needs of
deserving youth scholars.
The schools will strategically be located in Brgys. Dos
Hermanas and Concepcio. It will house the 70
student-beneficiaries that will take up courses such as
Seafaring-catering/Stewarding. Teachers and course
programs will be provided for by WNU.
Laboratory classes for these students will be held at
WNU-HM Laboratory. After completing the course, students
will also participate in the graduation ceremony of the
school
Dr. Agustin, in her response assures the local
government of Talisay of WNU’s commitment of providing
more opportunities through the program. The students
will be given special attention and educational care.
“WNU has established this linkage not only by providing
the necessary resources but in doing so, empowering the
community,” she added. * (rrm/aipro)
