Ecological Waste Management (EWM)

This project focuses on the implementation of waste segregation, collection and diversion with an education component. It will intensify the use of existing Recycling Technologies as waste paper recycling into handmade paper, conversion of tetra packs into marketable products and composting / vermicomposting.  It will continue to spearhead the Inventor’s Award that is aimed at promoting research on appropriate and marketable recycling technologies. Details on waste segregation, collection and disposal are indicated in the guidelines.

Guidelines for Garbage segregation, collection and disposal

1.       Sorting of all garbage will be done at source, which include working area, offices, classrooms, faculty rooms, canteen and hallways.  For each area , color coded garbage bins will be provided as follows:

                          Color                                       Type of Garbage

                           Blue                                         dry paper, cartoons

                                 Red                                          residual

                           Yellow                                      recyclables

                           Green                                       biodegradable

2. The Asset and Management Office is responsible for providing garbage bins in the hallways, working areas and canteen.  However, each college/department is responsible for providing garbage bins for faculty rooms and classrooms.

3. The canteen will adopt a “Clean as you Go” policy wherein each one will segregate his/her own waste in an area provided for by the management.

4. Sorted garbage will be collected by the janitors at specific schedule. Unsorted garbage will not be collected and its disposal becomes the responsibility of respective college/department/office.  Janitors will also report this non-compliance to the Asset and Management Office.

5. Sorted garbage will be brought to the Material Recovery Facility and stored in appropriate and designated areas.

6. Waste diversion will be maximized whenever possible.  Papers will be processed in the paper recycling center, biodegradable waste into compost / vermicompost, recyclable waste into various products.

7. In cases, that waste cannot be processed within the campus; it will initially be stored and sold to junk shops.  Money collected from this system will be kept and deposited in the bank under the custody of Asset and Management Office and used for environment related project.

8. Residual waste will be collected by the city.

Did you know?

If every student, faculty, and staff member ran their computer 24/7 for a year, it would result in 16.3 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions!
Turning those computers off or into a low power standby state for even 1/2 of that time could save us
Php 62 MILLION in utility bills.
