  The WNC Varsity Chess Team

If there is one chess team in Negros that has earned the reputation of producing the best woodpushers in town, that is the Chess Varsity of West Negros College. Currently, the WNC Chess Varsity is the defending champion of the National University Games' (UNIGAMES) for Men's Category. For two years now, WNC has bested other chess teams competing in the UNIGAMES from all over the country - in the Women's category as Champion in 2005 and First Runner-up in 2006.

These Wesnecan chess players dominated the recently concluded 27th Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association (NOPSSCEA) Chess Tournament, bagging 15 gold medals and 1 silver medal. The Chess Varsity took home four (4) out of the six (6) championships from the entire event: in the College Men, College Women, High School Boys and High School Girls categories.

Other titles the Chess Varsity are currently defending or strongly contending for are from the Shell National Active Chess Championships, Western Visayas Regional Private Schools Athletic Association (WV-PRISAA) Chess Tournament, Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Chess Tournament, RR Dizon Memorial Chess Championships, Pana-ad Provincial Chess Tournament, and other local and regional trophies.

The head coach behind the success of the Chess Varsity is Jose Dante T. Albao Sr., faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences, assisted by Edilberto M. Uy of the College of Computer Studies. The team's consultant and brainchild of WNC's chess program is Kim B. Dumdum of the College of Business and Management. The Chess Varsity team manager is the Director of the WNC Sports Office, Anthony Carlo A. Agustin.

The entire WNC Chess Varsity enjoy full scholarships, free miscellaneous/laboratory/other fees, while top players are being offered meal and transportation allowance with cash incentives for each winning streak, alongside the quality education that WNC offers.
