Football
Football in the Philippines had already achieved its
peak in the thirties and early forties, after the game
was introduced by British sailors from Hong Kong in the
1900’s. I has reached its peak in the Philippines
several times, in the early 1900s to the 1940s; however,
it later died with the introduction of basketball, and
the success of the country's basketball team, sparked
fever among most Filipinos. Several attempts to bring
back football in the Philippines has failed in the 1960s
to the late 1970s, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF)
is still trying until this day to once again resurrect
the game and to once again mount football as a national
sport in the Philippines.
Football is very popular and played by many people in
the provinces of
Iloilo, particularly in the
municipality of
Barotac Nuevo,
Negros Occidental and in
Mindanao
island.
West
Negros University, formerly West Negros College has
secured its mark in the football fields of the region
and the national arena since its establishment in 1981
and headed by Jose L. Gonzaga.
WNU
football team has accumulated several championship
awards since 1981 until the present and dominated the
Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural
Educational Association (NOPSSCEA) for the last decade.
It
was in the early 90’s when Anthony Carlo Agustin,
director of the Sports Management and Development Office
took over the program of the University leading the
youth to reach their full potential in the field of
sports.
